Law I

The Law of Inertia

An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion

Objects resist changes to their state of motion. A stationary ball won't move unless kicked, and a rolling ball continues rolling forever unless friction or another force stops it. This resistance to change is called inertia.

Real-World Examples

Passengers lurch forward when a car brakes suddenly
A tablecloth can be pulled from under dishes without disturbing them
Satellites orbit Earth indefinitely without fuel because there's no air resistance
Seatbelts protect us by counteracting our body's inertia during accidents

Law II

Force Equals Mass Times Acceleration

F = m × a

The acceleration of an object depends on the force applied and its mass. Push a light object with the same force as a heavy one, and the light object accelerates faster. Double the force on any object, and you double its acceleration.

Real-World Examples

It's easier to push an empty shopping cart than a full one
A sports car accelerates faster than a truck (less mass, same engine force)
Kicking a soccer ball sends it flying; kicking a bowling ball hurts your foot
Rockets need enormous thrust to lift their massive weight off the ground

Law III

Action and Reaction

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction

Forces always come in pairs. When you push on something, it pushes back with equal force. The forces are equal in strength but opposite in direction. This explains everything from walking to rocket propulsion.

Real-World Examples

Swimmers push water backward; water pushes them forward
A rocket expels gas downward; gas pushes the rocket upward
When you jump, you push Earth down; Earth pushes you up
Birds fly by pushing air down with their wings; air pushes them up
