A virus enters the body — through the respiratory tract, skin, or mucous membranes. It hijacks host cells to replicate, making copies of itself rapidly. Infected cells release chemical alarm signals called cytokines.

② Innate Immune Response (First Line of Defence) Hours 0–96

The innate immune system responds immediately but non-specifically. Macrophages engulf and destroy viral particles (phagocytosis). Natural Killer (NK) cells destroy virus-infected cells. Dendritic cells act as messengers — they swallow the virus and display its protein fragments (antigens) on their surface, then travel to lymph nodes to alert the adaptive immune system.

③ Adaptive Response — T Cell Activation Days 4–7

In the lymph nodes, dendritic cells present viral antigens to T cells. Two types are activated:

🔴 Cytotoxic T cells (CD8+) — hunt and kill any body cell that is infected with the virus.
🟡 Helper T cells (CD4+) — coordinate the immune response by releasing cytokines that activate B cells and boost cytotoxic T cells.

④ B Cells & Antibody Production Days 5–10

Helper T cells activate B cells, which differentiate into plasma cells — antibody factories. Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins that bind specifically to the virus's surface antigens. They work by:

Antibodies neutralise remaining viruses. Cytotoxic T cells eliminate the last infected cells. The viral load drops, symptoms fade, and the body starts to recover. Most of the activated immune cells are no longer needed and undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), scaling the response back down.

⑥ Immunological Memory — Long-Term Protection Weeks → Years

A small population of activated T and B cells survive as long-lived memory cells. They circulate in the blood and lymph tissue for years — sometimes decades. If the same virus is encountered again, memory cells mount a faster, stronger, and more targeted response — often clearing the infection before you even feel sick.
